Our Mission
The Mission of the Franco-American Centre is to preserve the rich heritage of our French communities. We promote History, Culture and Education with an understanding of their historic contributions, cultural and artistic expressions, both past and present. The Franco-American Centre in Manchester NH is recognized as the primary catalyst to involve the community in celebrating the richness of the Franco-American experience, embracing all people of French heritage. The Centre presents a wide variety of cultural programs, musical performances, and art exhibits, which are entertaining and informative.
La Semaine de la FrancophonieJosée Vachon
The Franco-American Centre is delighted to announce that Josée Vachon will be appearing at the Centre on Saturday, March 20. The evening will start with a reception at 6:30 PM, followed by Ms. Vachon's concert at 7:00 PM. Tickets for this event are specially priced at $20 for Franco-American Centre members, and $30 for non-members.
Franco-American Portaits
Saturday March 27, the Franco-American Centre will host an evening of bilingual theatre by New England troupe Du Monde d'à côté. They will
perform five 20 minute monologues, three in French and two English to
mark the close of la Semaine de la Francophonie. There are no tickets
for this event, but there will be a hat passed around for the audience to show their appreciation.
French Conversation: Prêt-à-Parler
Prêt-à-Parler
(Ready to Talk), the Franco-American Centre's new monthly French
conversation group is in its third month and grows with each meeting!
Come be a part of the conversation.
Prêt-à-Parler is informal, runs from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and
attendees arrive and depart at their leisure. There is a nominal fee of
$5 for members, $10 for non-members.
April will be themed "Voyages." Bring photos of a trip that you would like to share a story with everybody.
Gallery: Elise Kohl
A recognized and
critically acclaimed New England artist, Elise Kohl has exhibited and
taught art in Canada and in the United States for more than 50 years.
She was vice president of the Nashua Art Association in 1985, and
president of the New Hampshire Art Association in 1988-1990.
During
the 1990s, Ms. Kohl taught several watercolor workshops in Québec.
During this period, she came to realize that the religious education
received by French-Canadians who came of age in the 1950s still
strongly affected them. The result was Chapelet de Vie (Rosary of
Life), an extraordinary collection of watercolor paintings depicting
the Catholic nuns of that era from the perspectives of her own stern
religious education and many experiences with nuns.
Chapelet de Vie will be on exhibit at the Franco-American Centre through April 30.

This
a powerful documentary film that explores the struggle for cultural
survival among the French-Canadian, Franco-American communities of New
England. The film traces the French heritage beginning with immigration
from the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Acadia through persecution by
Ku Klux Klan and language loss, to cultural renaissance and heritage
preservation. Through their determined loyalty to the French Catholic
faith, language and cultural values, the French of New England continue
to discover new ways of renewal and cultural diversity through heritage
language reacquisition.
